ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Painting is my passion and I consider myself blessed. I am 83 years old and I look forward to each new day.

I began painting at the age of five, covering the underneath side of our magnificent mahogany dining room table with crayon drawings. I would lie on my back under the table and draw. My parents not only allowed it but praised my work. My dad would get under the table with me and talk about my drawings. My mother would absolutely refuse to let anyone wipe them away.

Several years ago, I moved from Southern California to California’s beautiful central coast where every time I look around there’s something or someone special to paint. It’s exhilarating to see how people move and present themselves, how barns, boats, houses, trees and hills arrange themselves in such a natural and magical order. The clear blue sky and glorious cloud formations are like none others I have seen.

I have been described as a contemporary expressionist. I think this implies that I am primarily concerned with how large shapes relate to one another within the perimeters of a two dimensional space. Positive and negative areas create an orderly pattern. Color is used to enhance this balance and to bind the shapes together.

It is my wish that when someone else sees my work, he or she will feel the pleasure and excitement I felt while doing the painting.
