ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Painting is my passion and I consider myself blessed.
Several years ago, I moved from Southern California t o California’s beautiful central coast where every time I look around there’s something or someone special to paint. It’s exhilarating to see how people move and present themselves, how barns, boats, houses, trees and hills arrange themselves in such a natural and magical order. The clear blue sky and glorious cloud formations are like none others I have seen.
I have been described as a contemporary expressionist. I think this implies that I am primarily concerned with how large shapes relate to one another within the perimeters of a two dimensional space. Positive and negative areas create an orderly pattern. Color is used to enhance this balance and to bind the shapes together. I enjoy the spontaneity of watercolors, I'm comfortable with acrylics, and the forgiving quality of oils sustains me. It is my wish that when someone else sees my work, he or she will feel the pleasure and excitement I felt while doing the painting.
Richard M. Greene, a nationally recognized artist, is an accomplished oil and acrylic painter. He has received numerous national and international awards, including the prestigious Salmagundi Club (New York City) National Acrylic Award, as well as the International Society of Acrylic Painters Savior Faire Award. His paintings hang in private collections, museums and galleries throughout the United States.
After being discharged from the United States Marines, Mr. Greene began his formal art training at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Then, he received a Bachelors Degree in Art from the University of Redlands, followed by a masters degree with an emphasis in painting from the University of California at Long Beach. In addition to being a hands-on artist, Richard worked as an art educator, teacher, and administrator. He now resides in Pismo Beach, a small community on the central coast of California.
He is primarily a people painter. The looks on his figures' faces speak volumes and they cover the spectrum of human experience. He is also a skilled still life, seascape and landscape artist, making wonderful use of light and dark.
Richard is described as a contemporary expressionist and his bold approach to painting is unique and immediately recognizable. He's become known for his style which is defined by his use of large brushes.
He is a member of Oil Painters of America, a signature member of International Society of Acrylic Painters, a member of the San Luis Obispo Art Center and El Camino Art Center.
